NATIONAL SECURITY MISSIONS

In order to defeat an enemy in combat you must first know something about them. How they prefer to fight, what weapons they have available, their numbers, doctrine & how much they follow it, their current location, their mission, and so on. You must also be able to take this information, and combine it with the constraints imposed by the battlefield (weather, light, terrain, and the socio-political situation) in order to formulate a prediction about what they Can do and are Likely to do. Only then can we create a battle plan that ensures their defeat. These things that we must know about the enemy are called Military Intelligence.

Military Intelligence is not discovered, it is produced by soldiers with special technical training. First they determine which things about the enemy and the environment are the most important to mission success. Then they determine the scope and parameters of these unknowns, develop theories about what they might be, and determine where and how they might look to discover the answers. They and others then systematically search for the bits of information from across the battlefield that can confirm or deny their theories. As this information streams in, they confirm its reliability, analyze it for meaning, try to fit it into everything else they know, and attempt to synthesize it into a unified understanding of the situation. Finally, when this has been accomplished, they deliver the resulting Military Intelligence to those responsible for creating the plan and executing the operation to destroy the enemy.
